Continue readingClinical year started out with a whirlwind of “firsts.” First clinical rotation, first time interviewing a “real” patient, first time delivering a baby. Then a few weeks later, after just beginning to settle in, I moved to a new house, a new city, a new area of medicine, new coworkers, and a new computer system. All of this change left my head spinning, and the pandemic shutdown hadn’t even begun yet! I started to experience feelings of incompetence, loneliness, and self-doubt, and I wondered if I could even make it through this thing called clinical year.

I sit here writing this the day after my last day of clinical rotations and still at a loss for how to feel. Surreal for sure is about the only word that I can muster at the moment. PA school will be a finished chapter in the coming days but the PA profession stretches before our class, with many more things to teach us as we keep forging ahead. Looking back at this past year I would like to touch on some of the hard won lessons from clinical rotations that I think everyone should know as they embark on this journey:

Somehow it feels like our white coat ceremony was last week… and a lifetime ago. If any of you are like me, you are currently feeling a similar mix of emotions as the days leading up to that big milestone. Graduation is fast approaching, and with it, our time to officially take on the role of provider. Even without the graduation celebration we were all expecting at the start, my hope is that each of us will take a moment to reflect over the last couple years. There have been great joys and triumph, as well as struggle and adversity. All of which has prepared us to impact the lives of patients and the medical field as a whole.
